Papal Tombs and Monuments (1447-1559) Part XVI

Pope Paul IV
Giovanni Pietro Cardinal Carafa, Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri, Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, Archbishop of Naples, Inquisitor General of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition. Elected Bishop of Rome on 23 May 1555 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Paul IV, and was crowned on 26 May.

Pope Paul IV died on 18 August 1559 in Rome, in the 5th year of his pontificate. He was buried on 19 August in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 2 October 1566 to the basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome.
