Pope Marcellus II

Marcello Cardinal Cervini, Cardinal Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Administrator of Gubbio, Librarian of the Holy Roman Church. Elected Bishop of Rome on 9 April 1555 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Marcellus II, and was consecrated to the episcopate and crowned on 10 April.

Pope Marcellus II died on 1 May 1555 in Rome, in the 1st year of his pontificate, at the age of 53-years. He was buried on 2 May in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 16 October 1606 to the Grottoes of the same basilica.
