Papal Tombs and Monuments (1559-1655) Part I

Pope Pius IV
Giovanni Angelo Cardinal de' Medici, Cardinal Priest of Santa Prisca, former Bishop of Foligno with the title of Archbishop ad personam. Elected Bishop of Rome on 25 December 1559 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Pius IV, and was crowned on 6 January 1560.

Pope Pius IV died on 9 December 1565 in Rome, in the 6th year of his pontificate. He was buried on 19 December in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 4 June 1583 to the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, Rome.
