Pope Adrian VI

Adriaan Florenszoon Cardinal Dedel, Cardinal Priest of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Bishop of Tortosa, Lieutenant General of Castile and Leon. Elected Bishop of Rome in absentia on 9 January 1522 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Adrian VI, and was crowned on 31 August.

Pope Adrian VI died on 14 September 1523 in Rome, in the 2nd year of his pontificate. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and his mortal remains were transferred on 11 August 1533 to the church of Santa Maria dell'Anima, Rome.
