Pope Sixtus IV

Francesco Cardinal della Rovere, O.F.M.Conv., Cardinal Priest of San Pietro in Vincoli. Elected Bishop of Rome on 10 August 1471 in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, taking the name Sixtus IV, and was consecrated to the episcopate and crowned on 25 August.

Pope Sixtus IV died on 12 August 1484 in Rome, in the 14th year of his pontificate. He was buried in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, and during the reign of Pope Urban VIII his mortal remains were transferred, together with those of his nephew, Pope Julius II, to the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the same basilica. In 1922, the monument was moved to St. Peter's Museum (currently it is in the basilica's Treasury). When it was removed, Sixtus IV's remains, along with those of Pope Julius II were interred in the pavement in front of the monument to Pope Clement X.
