On Saturday 1st March, the former Cardinal Protodeacon, Cardinal Dario Castrillón Hoyos, opted for the order of Cardinal Priests after ten years as a Cardinal Deacon. As a result His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, confirmed Cardinal Agostino Cacciavillan, Cardinal Deacon of the title Ss. Angeli Custodi a Città Giardino in the office of Cardinal Protodeacon.
The Cardinal Protodeacon is the Cardinal who announces the election of a new Pope (that is, if he himself hasn't been elected!).
