The ordination of Monsignor Noel Treanor as Bishop of Down and Connor on 29th June 2008 will be the first ordination of a Bishop of Down and Connor since the consecration of Fr Daniel Mageean on 25th August 1929. Mageean's successor, William Philbin, was aleady Bishop of Clonfert. Philbin's successor, Cahal Daly, was already Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise and Daly's successor, Patrick Walsh, was already Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor.

Of course Dr. Mageean was consecrated in St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral which until relatively recently (c.1986) was the preferred location for significant episcopal activity in the diocese. So June 29th 2008 will be the first time a priest has been raised to the full episcopate in St. Peter's Cathedral.
